Monica Bertagnolli, M.D., Director

Monica Bertagnolli, M.D., previously served on Natera’s board of directors from November 2020 to August 2022, when she resigned due to her appointment as director of the National Cancer Institute. Bertagnolli rejoined the Natera board in March 2025.


Most recently, Bertagnolli served as director of the National Institutes of Health from 2023 to January 2025. Earlier in her career, she held various roles at Harvard Medical School, including professor of surgery in the field of surgical oncology. During this time, Bertagnolli was also an associate surgeon in the Surgical Oncology division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She was previously chief of the Surgical Oncology division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center.


Bertagnolli currently serves on the board of directors of Friends of Cancer Research and on the scientific advisory board of a private biopharmaceutical company. She previously served, among others, as chair of the board of directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), as group chair and president of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology Foundation, and as chief executive officer of Alliance Foundation Trials LLC. She also served, among others, on the board of directors of the American Cancer Society and the Prevent Cancer Foundation, as well as on numerous committees and advisory boards.


Bertagnolli holds a BSE in biochemical engineering, an M.D. from the University of Utah College of Medicine, and an M.A. in the science of medicine from Harvard University.
